Read more and get started right away!
Already the third training of this series, good you're here! Last week we discussed the trend profession landscape. This week you are going to create your own trend definition. Are your brains already thinking about what this could be? Well that's a good warm up, now let's get started!
What people think we do
When I tell people I do something in trends, most of the time their answer is something like: 'oh, so you do a lot with fashion.' or 'cool so what's going to be next year's color?' or something in the area of 'oh so you predict the future!'.
Well no, not exactly. But then, what do I do? That’s why we are doing this exercise! When you create your own trend definition, you will find out it gets more easy to explain it to others.
Now let's get started with the mind map. (I would recommend you to read page 36-38 in the 'How to Research Trends' first.) What comes in mind when you think about trends? Write this down in the circles around the word Trend. This map is going to help you define what the meaning is of a trend, in your own words.
Now we are going to combine those descriptions into a short text. What are the most important things and can you connect them together? It is not necessary to use everything you have written down, as long as it is a clear story what a trend means for you. The only tip I can give you is to try out multiple texts until you find one which makes you feel: YES, this is it!
What is a trend for me?
The things I have written down are: Change in community, Diverse in impact, Can never be 100% predicted, Micro macro and mega, Changing values and needs, Comes and goes, there are long-and short term trends, and that a lot of people I speak to think it has something to do with fashion or the latest interior color. Now I've combined them into my definition of a trend:
'A trend is a change in values, dreams, fears and desires you can see in society from a human perspective.'
