Every week I’ll be sharing what I read with you & please share with me what you are reading to inspire ✨ each other and break out of our filter bubbles. What I’m reading 📖 this week: RETROTOPIA // Want to know more? Read on!
I had heard about Utopia and Dystopia, but never of Retrotopia. This book by renowned sociologist 🤓 Zygmunt Bauman states that nowadays we are looking at the past ⏪ to form a future vision. And he also explains why.
In our current fluid 〰️ and fragmented society we tend to feel lost and displaced. This makes us yearn 🙌🏻 for continuity and stability. As the future is uncertain, where better to find this stability than in the past?
Bauman feels this is one of the reasons 🗝 for resurgence of nationalistic parties. These tend to turn to the past to provide people with a sense of cultural 💎 identity (us vs. them). This makes people go inward and isolate ❌ themselves from ‘the other’.
But is the past really stable and trustworthy? 🤔 Bauman thinks not and he pleads for a future of global human 🙋🏽♀️🙋🏻♂️integration. This means we should see each other as fellow earthlings 🌍 instead of ‘us vs. them’. This calls for a collective consciousness 💭and an open dialogue 💬.
Bauman died shortly after Retrotopia was published. Let’s use his future vision as a starting point 🌱 to create a more human ✨ society.
